Weekly Trinute : Green Day

Green Day is an American punk rock band consisting of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt (born Michael Pritchard), and Trι Cool (born Frank Edwin Wright III).
At the age of 12, Tre Cool became a member of the band The Lookouts. Their album attracted some attention, and Tre began performing at an early age at the Berkeley, California punk club 924 Gilman Street. In 1988, Armstrong (16 years old) and Dirnt (16 years old) formed Sweet Children, with Armstrong on lead vocals and guitar, Mike Pritchard, aka Mike Dirnt, on bass and backing vocals, and John Kiffmeyer, aka Al Sobrante, on drums.

Their first show was in 1988 at Rod's Hickory Pit in Rodeo, California. A couple months later, they played a high school party with the Lookouts in a remote mountain location near Willits, California, where Tre and Kain Kong of the Lookouts lived and attended school. Only five kids showed up for the party, and there was no electricity in the house, so Sweet Children had to play using a generator and candlelight, but they played, as Lookouts singer/guitarist Lawrence Livermore put it, 'As if they were the Beatles at Shea Stadium.'
Livermore, who also ran the Berkeley independent label Lookout! Records, immediately offered Sweet Children a deal, and in early 1989 they recorded their first EP, '1,000 Hours,' and then decided, weeks before the EP release, to change their name to Green Day. The record came out, with the cover changed at the last minute to reflect the new name, in April of 1989.
One year later, in April of 1990, Green Day released their first album, '39/Smooth' (re-issued on CD in 1991, with 9 additional tracks, as '1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours'), and that summer set out in a van on their first national tour. Before leaving, they recorded another four-song EP called 'Slappy,' and while in Minneapolis-St. Paul they recorded a four-song EP of some of their old songs for the local label Skene Records, and called it 'Sweet Children.'
After this tour, at the end of the summer of 1990, John Kiffmeyer/Al Sobrante left the band on what was supposed to be a temporary basis to attend college in Arcata, California. By this time the Lookouts had become mostly inactive, and Tre Cool, now 17, and who had moved to Berkeley, began playing with Green Day as a temporary replacement. The combination worked out so well that he soon became Green Day's permanent drummer.
During 1991 the band toured and played locally, building up a large following, and also wrote and recorded their second album, 'Kerplunk!', released on Lookout Records in January of 1992. The CD version also included the four tracks from the 'Sweet Children' EP. They continued to tour through 1992 and 1993, ranging as far afield as the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Holland, Poland, and the Czech Republic (then still known as Czechoslovakia.

By 1993 Green Day had sold about 55,000 copies of each of their first albums, a huge amount for the independent punk scene in those days, and attracted a great deal of attention from the major labels. Eventually they decided to sign a deal with Reprise Records, leaving Lookout on friendly terms, and spent the greater part of the year recording their major label debut, 'Dookie,' which proved to be an almost instant sensation, helped by extensive MTV airplay for the videos 'Longview' and 'Basket Case.'
The band joined the lineups of both the Lollapalooza Festival and Woodstock 1994. Green Day's Woodstock gig included a gigantic mud fight between the band and the audience, leading to a melee which led to Dirnt's losing his front teeth.
They recorded a single called 'J.A.R.' in 1995, and followed it up with the album Insomniac. Though the album didn't approach the success of Dookie, it still sold several million copies in the U.S. Their third major label album, Nimrod, was released in 1997, and Warning in 2000.
In 2003 (during time spent in the Studio) a New Wave band has appeared on the Scene, known as The Network. This 5 piece band, at first look/listen appears to be Green Day. The front man 'Fink' bears a striking resemblance to one Wilhelm Fink (Billie Joe Armstrong's Pseudonym).
Fighting burnout after Warning, the band went into the studio to write and record new material for an album. After completing 20 tracks - an impressive album according to those few who heard it - the master tapes were stolen from the studio. The band chose not to try and re-create the stolen album but instead started over with a vow to be even more ambitious.

Weekly Tribute : Nirvana

Nirvana's Origins:

Nirvana changed the landscape of rock music over the course of only a few years, but in the beginning, they were just one more struggling group deciding on a lineup and a name. In 1985, guitarist/singer Kurt Cobain met bassist Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington, instantly bonding over their mutual love of the punk-metal band the Melvins. The duo brought in several different drummers over the next couple years, eventually settling on Chad Channing. Meanwhile, the group shuffled through different band names (including the Stiff Woodies, Pen Cap Chew and Skid Row) before opting fo

r Nirvana.

Nirvana's Promising First Album:

After recording a series of demos in 1988, Nirvana landed a deal with Seattle label Sub Pop. A year later, the group released their first record, Bleach. Though it only sold about 35,000 copies, Bleach est

ablished Cobain’s penchant for angry, compelling songs about society’s outsiders. Leaning heavily on hard rock and metal, Bleach didn’t sport the same pop hooks that Nirvana’s later albums would feature, although “About a Girl” demonstrated his early flair for catchy pop songs akin to the Beatles.

A New Decad

e and a New Drummer:

As the band entered the '90s, Cobain’s songwriting would continue to blossom. Another important improvement occurred around the same time: Channing left the group and was replaced by Dave Grohl, the former drummer of the punk band Scream. Bleach had won the admiration of respected groups such as Sonic Youth, and demos of subsequent sessions began attracting the attention of major labels. Signing with DGC and with Growl now in tow, Nirvana recorded their follow-up, an album called Nevermind. It would have been the furthest thought from any of the band members’ minds at the time, but superstardom was on the horizon.

Breaking Through to the Mainstream:

Released in September of 1991, Nevermind wasn’t an immediate blockbuster, but on the strength of its first single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” the album reached the top of the charts by January 1992. At a time when pop and hair metal were extraordinarily popular, Nevermind signaled a cultural shift toward more urgent, intense music sparked by introspective, sometimes caustic, lyrics. The album generated four singles and catapulted the band from the tiny Washington city to superstar status.

Drug Addiction:

Though Cobain now enjoyed universal acclaim and exceptional sales, he couldn’t fully savor his moment in the sun, as he was in the midst of a horrible heroin addiction that had been developing from before Nevermind. Questions about his health circulated as Nirvana returned to the studio in 1993 to record their next album. The willfully prickly In Utero proved to be less listener-friendly, but Cobain’s commitment to hook-laden songs transcended the album's surface aggressiveness. In Utero may have scared off causal fans who simply wanted Nevermind II, but it was an instant critic

al success and a strong seller.

Tragedy:

On April 8, 1994, Cobain’s body was found in his home in Seattle. The cause of death was determined to be suicide from a shotgun blast to the head. It had not been Cobain’s first suicide attempt, but the news of his death nevertheless was a shock to his many fans.

Life After Nirvana:

Though Nirvana disbanded shortly thereafter, their legacy remains unscarred, with the band’s biggest hits still a staple of rock radio. Grohl, Novoselic and Cobain’s widow Courtney Love (of the band Hole) have subsequently released live albums and compilations, including a greatest-hits package and a box set of rare tracks. Novoselic has played in a few bands since Nirvana’s dissolution, while Grohl has focused his energy on his own band, Foo Fighters.

Song Of The Day : Giusy Ferreri - Non Ti Scordar Mai Di Me

lyrics:
Se fossi qui con me questa sera
Sarei felice e tu lo sai.
Starebbe meglio anche la luna,
ora più piccola che mai.
Farei anche a meno della nostalgia
Che da lontano
Torna per portarmi via
Del nostro amore solo una scia
Che il tempo poi cancellerà
E nulla sopravviverà.

Non ti scordar mai di me,
di ogni mia abitudine,
in fondo siamo stati insieme

in fondo siamo stati insieme
e non è un piccolo particolare.
Non ti scordar mai di me,
della più incantevole fiaba
che abbia mai scritto,
un lieto fine era previsto e assai gradito.

Non ti scordar…
Non ti scordar…

Non ti scordar mai di me,
di ogni mia abitudine,
in fondo siamo stati insieme
e non è un piccolo particolare.
Non ti scordar mai di me,
della più incantevole fiaba
che abbia mai scritto,
un lieto fine era previsto e assai gradito.

Weekly Tribute: Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne is a girl who knows what she wants. And when it came to writing her eagerly awaited third album, The Best Damn Thing, she had one very clear goal in mind: To make it fun. While touring in 2004 for her last album, Under My Skin, which sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, the Canadian-born punk-pop dynamo found that her favorite songs to play were the faster, more up-tempo songs so she resolved to make a record that captured the kind of high-spirited, full-throttle energy that she loved to unleash on-stage.

The Best Damn Thing is brimming with gutsy guitar riffs, instantaneously catchy sing-along party-starting choruses, power pop punk, and rebellious rock 'n' roll attitude. It's a marked departure from the darker, more introspective tone of Under My Skin and on tracks such as the defiant, riotous, kiss-off-to-a-cheating-boyfriend "Everything Back But You", Avril took pleasure in creating scenarios for her lyrics that weren't, as she says, "straight out of my diary." The result is a collection of songs that reveal just how far she's evolved as a songwriter and singer, from the sassy, empowering "I Can Do Better" (one of Avril's personal favorites) to the irrepressible first single "Girlfriend" which unexpectedly combines a hip-hop beat with beefy power chords, hand-claps, and a chanted girl-group-style chorus with a punk rock twist to the emotional ballad "Keep Holding On", which she wrote at the request of 20th Century Fox for the studio's fantasy/adventure film Eragon.

As an artist with a keen and well-trained ear for powerful, magnetic pop melodies, Avril was intensely involved in every aspect of The Best Damn Thing's creation: From being fiercely independent while writing her own songs ("I didn't have an A&R guy on this record," she emphasizes. "I knew exactly how I wanted it to sound."), to choosing her producers and musical collaborators, to obsessively going back and tweaking guitar tones and drumbeats in the studio, she worked hard to ensure that it would be her best record yet.

The album features the production skills of Butch Walker (who has also produced The Donnas, American Hi-Fi, and Avril's second album, Under My Skin), Dr. Luke (Pink, Lady Sovereign), Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Goo Goo Dolls), and her husband Deryck Whibley (from Sum 41). The process turned out to be a blast: "I didn't know making a record could be so fun," she says. She was eager to work with her good friend Butch again, as she says, "What's great about Butch is that he's a talented artist as well as being an incredible producer." And about collaborating with Dr. Luke, she adds, "Luke and I had a really good connection and chemistry." The relaxed atmosphere in the studio comes across in the songs themselves . Avril's laughter rings out in "I Can Do Better", and in "Girlfriend" you can hear her, she says, "playing a beer bottle" (by blowing into it) in the last few choruses.

Four of the songs on The Best Damn Thing "Innocence", "Hot", "One of Those Girls", and "Contagious" were co-written with Avril's former bandmate Evan Taubenfeld. "Evan is one of my best friends in the world," she says, affectionately. "He's been with me since day one."

Of course, all of the spiky, buoyant energy that drives the album will come to life in the live show that Avril is planning for her tour later this year. She has assembled a new band, and is even bringing along two dancers ("I'm doing choreographed dancing for the first time ever," she grins. "It's going to be such a blast").

A great deal has happened in Avril Lavigne's life since she released her debut album, Let Go, in 2002, when she was 17 years old. That album snagged 8 Grammy nominations and four Juno Awards (including Album of the Year and New Artist of the Year), spawned the anthemic hit singles "Complicated", "Sk8ter Boi", and "I'm With You", and sold more than 16 million copies world-wide. Under My Skin cemented the Napanee, Ontario native's superstardom, entering U.S., Canadian, and U.K. charts at #1, unleashing smash singles "Don't Tell Me" and "My Happy Ending", and collecting three more Juno Awards along the way. In 2006, Avril married Sum 41's Deryck Whibley and branched out into acting, appearing in Richard Linklater's Fast Food Nation and lending her voice to the Dreamworks animated film Over the Hedge.

She may be a bit more sophisticated these days, but she's still peerless, and still fearless. The Best Damn Thing is Avril Lavigne at a new stage in her life; she's passed through the shadows of teen angst and emerged in a spotlight, ready to have fun and rock out and yes, even dance. It is, just as she intended, the best damn thing she's ever done.
